From Casa Bur-Sus to Hacienda San Angel: A Journey of Glamour and Transformation: The story of Hacienda San Angel is one of romance, glamour, and heartfelt transformation. It all began in 1977 when Richard Burton purchased the main villa as a Valentine’s Day gift for his wife, Susan, after falling in love with Puerto Vallarta while filming "The Night of the Iguana" in the 1960s when he was married to Elizabeth Taylor (Elizabeth Taylor and Welsh actor Richard Burton were married twice (1964–1974, 1975–1976), both unions ending in divorce.

The villa, named Casa Bur-Sus after the couple, became a haven for them just blocks away from the home of Burton's famous ex, Elizabeth Taylor. In 1990, Janice Chatterton purchased Casa Bur-Sus, initially as a vacation home. Following the loss of her son, Janice channeled her grief into transforming the villa, nurturing her love for antiques and her passion for rescuing animals.

Over time, she expanded the property, and Casa Bur-Sus evolved into Casa San Angel and finally became Hacienda San Angel in 2003.

Today, it stands as one of the world's top luxury boutique hotels, offering guests an experience brimming with intimate sophistication and historical charm.

Note: "Burtons’ extravagant spending would shock even the most jaded oligarch. Burton, who used a $1.25 million check as a bookmark, once bought a $960,000 jet plane on a whim, after they flew on it to Paris. The couple supported an army of charities, extended family, and staff. They bought property in Puerto Vallarta, Switzerland, and Ireland, and owned the Kalizma, their floating luxe palace. According to Furious Love, they also owned paintings by “Monet, Picasso…Renoir, Rouault, Pissarro, Degas, Augustus John, and Rembrandt.” - Vanity Fair
